What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is an environment of interconnected organisms and physical elements. A coral reef’s ecosystem, for example, consists of coral, sand, microorganisms, sea anemones, seaweed, shellfish and fish of all sizes. Ecosystems can be large, like Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, or small, like a terrarium. Ecosystems of all sizes are maintained by the interaction of all organic and inorganic components in a constant cycle of energy and nutrients, driven mainly through photosynthesis.
